Meet Sharna Arceri

Meet Sharna – The Heart Behind ABC Disability Group

For me, ABC Disability Group was never about simply starting a business. It was about creating something I felt was missing.

Before working in disability support, I was a manager in the hospitality industry. I later worked for several disability organisations, and while I absolutely loved working with the participants, I often felt saddened by what I saw around me.

I would see participants spending hours sitting at the shops or going to the same park just to fill their day. I remember thinking, surely we can offer more than this.

The people I worked with had personalities, interests, talents, dreams and so much potential. They had so much to offer the world—they just needed people around them who believed in them and were willing to create the opportunities for them to discover their place in it.

That became the reason I started ABC Disability Group.

I wanted to create a service where we didn't just fill someone's day. I wanted participants to experience life—to learn new skills, go to new places, build friendships, have responsibilities, make their own choices, become more independent and discover what they are capable of.

Why Being Family-Run Matters to Me

I come from a big, loving Italian family, where family has always meant everything. Growing up surrounded by that love, connection and sense of belonging has had a huge influence on the kind of organisation I wanted ABC Disability Group to become.

I never wanted ABC to feel like a large, impersonal service where participants were simply another name on a list. I wanted it to feel warm, familiar and genuine.

Our participants and their families become an extension of our own family. We celebrate their achievements, encourage them through their challenges, laugh together, make memories together and genuinely care about what happens in their lives.

Being family-run allows us to hold onto those values. We know our participants. We know their families. We know what makes them laugh, what they're working towards and what makes them proud.

As ABC Disability Group continues to grow, that's something I never want us to lose

Because at the end of the day, disability support shouldn't just be about providing a service.

It should be about giving people opportunities, believing in what they can achieve and helping them build a life where they feel valued, included and that they truly belong.

Meet Nadene Arceri

Meet Nadene – A Lifetime of Care, Experience & Passion

For Nadene, working in disability support has always been deeply personal. Her passion began with her brother, who has a disability, giving her an understanding from an early age of just how important the right care, encouragement and opportunities can be—not only for the individual, but for their whole family.

With more than 15 years of hands-on experience, Nadene still loves what she does every day. One of the most rewarding parts of her role is helping our staff understand each participant as an individual and finding the best possible way to support them.

Nadene believes great support isn't about doing everything for someone. It's about discovering what a person is capable of and giving them the encouragement, patience and opportunity to achieve more for themselves.

She loves challenging participants in positive ways, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zone and try things they may never have thought were possible. Whether it's developing a new life skill, becoming more independent, trying a new experience or achieving a personal goal, seeing someone realise “I can do this” is what makes the job so rewarding.

Behind the scenes, Nadene and the ABC Disability Group team put an incredible amount of care into making sure everything is right. Long days and long hours go into planning, preparing and getting the little details right before a participant even walks through the door. Because to us, those little details matter.

Nadene also understands the importance of working closely with families. Her own experiences have helped shape her belief that families should feel heard, understood and confident in the people supporting their loved one.

Her goal is to help create a team where staff strive to be the best versions of themselves, so in turn, they can help every participant discover their strengths, build their confidence and achieve things they may never have believed were possible.

Because sometimes the greatest part of support is believing in someone's potential until they begin to believe in it themselves.

Meet John Arceri

Meet John – The Man Who Never Stops

Every family-run business has that one person who somehow gets called whenever something needs to be built, fixed, moved, repaired, created or somehow made to work. At ABC Disability Group, that person is John.

John is the man behind so many of the things that happen behind the scenes. If we come up with an idea and need something built, we call John. If something breaks, we call John. If something needs fixing, changing or putting together, you guessed it—we annoy John!

But no matter what we throw his way, John is always there to lend a hand and find a way to get the job done.

Being part of a family-run business means everyone contributes in their own way, and John is a huge part of what keeps ABC Disability Group moving. Many of the little things our participants and families may never see are possible because of the time, effort and care he puts in behind the scenes.

He may occasionally wonder what we've volunteered him for next, but his willingness to help is one of the things that makes ABC feel like a family.

If we can dream it up, chances are John will be the one we ask to build it!

Meet Jordan Mahieu

Meet Jordan – Our IT Man & Sharna’s Technology Lifesaver

Every business needs an IT person, but at ABC Disability Group, there’s one very important reason we need Jordan… Sharna and technology are definitely not best friends!

If there’s a computer that suddenly stops working, a printer that refuses to print, a program that disappears or some mysterious technology problem that nobody can explain, there’s a pretty good chance Sharna touched it—and Jordan will be getting a phone call.

Thankfully, Jordan is always there to fix what Sharna has somehow managed to break, get everything back up and running and keep ABC connected behind the scenes.

While we like to give him a hard time, Jordan plays an important role in keeping our technology and systems working so our team can focus on what really matters—supporting our participants and families.

His patience is regularly tested, his IT skills are constantly put to work, and we're fairly certain Sharna provides him with more than enough job security!

Sharna touches it. It stops working. Jordan fixes it. Repeat. 😂
